The foundation of the band was laid in 1987 when the fifteen year old Armstrong and Dirnt together with John Kiffmeyer formed a band under the name Sweet Children. Later before the release of their debut extended paly, 1000 Hours with Lookout! Records they changed the name to Green Day. The early nineties saw the band release their debut album 39Smooth which was rated three out of five by Allmusic. After the release of their first album the band went on tour both in USA and across Europe. Initially the bands second album Kerplunk was not a massive hit but since then it has proved to be one of the bestselling independently released albums of all time. The album got the band recognition from major records and soon they signed with Reprise Records.
It was after their changing of record labels that the band found success and went mainstream. Their album Dookie went on to have diamond status and three songs from the album reached the top of the Modern Rock Tracks. Dookie was nominated for nine MTV awards and won a Grammy Award for the Best Alternative Album. The bands fourth album Insomniac sold more than two million copies in the USA and received nominations from Grammy Awards, MTV Music Video Awards and American Music Awards. The album earned critical acclaim and received four stars from Rolling Stone. The bands sixth album Warning was certified gold and received a rating of four point five from Allmusic. Entering the charts at number ten the bands experimental fifth alum Nimrod contained a range of music genres.
The bands sixth album was a major success and entered the Billboard Charts at number one. This seven time award winning album was adapted for the stage. This is an achievement very few rock bands can boast of. American Idiot: The Musical was directed by none other than the Tony Award winner Michael Mayer. The musical won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 2011 and received nominations for Drama Desk Awards, Tony Awards and Outer Critics Circle Awards. The acclaimed musical was also staged on the Broadway. The bands eighth album 21st Century Breakdown reached number one in fourteen countries.
Green day has also given soundtracks for films like Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Angus. The bands popular song Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) was featured on an episode of Seinfeld and two episodes of ER. Interestingly the band has also made a guest appearance on the comedy series King of the Hill and another one in The Simpsons Movie, in which they performed their cover version of the Simpsons theme. The famous band has the honor of teaming up with with the very pioneer of punk rock, Iggy Pop for two songs on his album Skull Ring. Also they have done a cover of The Skids song The Saints Are Coming alongside U2 to raise money for charity. The bands cover of John Lennon’s song Working Class Hero received nomination from Grammy Awards.
The band has toured across the US as the opening act for the Californian punk rock band Pansy Division and has played at various musical festivals including Rock am See festival, Reading festival, Woodstock, and Lollapalooza. The bands popular Pop Disaster Tour with Blink 182 was documented under the name ‘Riding in Vans with the Boys’ and was released on DVD.
